For many people, the holiday season is a time of great excitement, joy and spending time with family and friends. Its also a time of year when many people over stretch themselves beyond their means physically, emotionally and financially.
Many feel the strain and stress of holiday gift buying, only to then feel the pressure of debt for months (sometimes years) afterward – only to do it all over again next year. According to a 2008 survey from Consumer Reports, about 12 million Americans are still paying off credit card debt for purchases made last holiday season!
Is this healthy? Is this really what the holiday season is all about?
Recently, we’ve had many people asking Dani about a "ministry" we started years ago called Secret Blessings. This "ministry" has no walls, no buildings, no board of directors, no elders or organizers to report to – none of that. Its a very simple idea, ANYONE can do it and its EXTREMELY effective.

Giving and doing for others, getting the focus off of self, doesn’t have to be limited to just this time of year. Be blessed and be a blessing whenever you can.
I don’t buy presents for family, friends this time of year. I learned that lesson when I gave my mother a gift many years ago and she returned it to me!
If family, friends etc don’t want to listen to the opportunity I have for them to change their life and the environment (which they don’t) then they don’t deserve gifts…..
I am free from entrapment!! It’s a great feeling! And I don’t have any guilt!

Dani, I’m literally ‘in tears’ with the concept of another Christmas. I seek no more frustration of having to over spend under obligation on family ‘already in adequate abundance’. I seek no more pressure, frustration and wasted money in making desperate decisions to generate fast cash!
Truly, Christmas is about giving to those whom have ‘nothing’.
Dani – GOD BLESS you – I have felt this way for YEARS. I despise the commercialism of Christmas. We need to get back to remembering that it is a celebration of the birth of our Lord and Savior. I went to one of your First Steps to Success events and heard you talk about how you found a needy family and you purchased a Christmas for them. I did that as well and It was the best feeling that I ever had and I have done it most every year since then. This year I am going to send a check in the name of Jesus to a friend of my son that are struggling. To show them how Christmas is about giving and not just receiving. We want to give to people that are less fortunate then we are.
Dani is right on! I don’t give gifts out of tradition or obligation anymore. We give more Christmas gifts to people we never met before or will never meet, than people we do know. I realized that it doesn’t make sense to indulge kids and people who have plenty with more “stuff”, when there are so many opportunities to give to those who actually need.
When I think about what the feeling is of giving to friends that I Love and appreciate …it still is about me. If you ever give a gift it should be anonymous. But really Christ was all about loving on the unlovely. He was about giving to all of us that were in such a needy state of being. We are to become Christ Like in our expression of living. I will Love and shower a needy family this season in the name of Jesus.
Dani is correct. We are sponsoring a family this Christmas with their gifts. I thank the Lord everyday that he has given us the ability to help others with what He has given us
Living each day with a blank board. I am so mentally blocked, yet I trust my God, and have my faith that He is never late. I have made many wealthy, many happy, many free, yet I am surrounded by many who have “the world owes them attitude,” and it is sucking the life out of me. Today I live in gratitude and appreciation what is to come, the opportunty for me!

God put this same type of idea on my heart a while back. I want to take my grand kids and my adult kids and pick a family and do this same thing for them. I also want us, as a family, to go serve at a shelter this Christmas season. You are so right, we have forgotten the meaning of Christmas. And we are so blessed, we need to give and give with a generous heart. My thought is I would like to make Jesus smile this year! I am aboard and passing this on.

What a wonderful Idea, I don’t have much myself, but I have Identified a family that can use this kind of secret blessing and I trust God to be able to bring them a secret blessing this Christmas. What an opportunity to be a blessing.
I lost my 27 year old daughter in Aug.,2009 due to suicide. She left behind a beautiful 6 year old daughter for me to raise.
Due to it being suicide – I now have funeral expenses, which have really put me in a great financial bind. Any advice for getting financial help would be appreciated.

This is wonderful! My family doesn’t go overboard on presents any more, thank God! It is such a relief to focus on the important things at Christmas – Jesus and family. No debt incurred, no stressful running around town. How much better to focus on others!

This is something that we have done for a few years. Now, after years of being the one that always gave, I find myself in a position of need. We are facing for the first time in our lives, the very real possibility of losing our home. I lost my job and my husband just found out that his department is cutting back. He has already taken a huge cut in pay and we don’t have anyone that can help us through this financial nightmare. We were blessed to pay off most of our debt earlier this year, but still have a mortgage and utilities to pay. We don’t have cable tv or cell phones, so it’s not like we have luxuries that we can get rid of. We can’t even get government assistance because of my husband’s job. It’s a heck of a note when for 26 years I have paid into the very system that won’t even help me. I want desperately to be able to work online from home so that I can be home with my child, but I can’t seem to find anyone that REALLY knows what they are doing and are willing to teach me. But, I keep praying. I know that eventually, God will provide. It’s just difficult not knowing when.
Yes, the greatest joy of Christmas is being an instrument for the Lord, whose Birthday we Celebrate!
For over 40 years we, and several of our grown children, have silently helped at least 1 family each Christmas. There are so many in need!
It is a tradition to cherish!
Anyone who has been blessed by others will recognize the joy of giving and the blessing of receiving.
Someone has to receive for us to be able to give. Be a grateful receiver and pass it forward when you can!
It lightens their load and brightens our hearts.
We also have a Birthday Cake for the Savior and during the day we have a time of Thanks for our blessings and we try to recognize how we can become more like Jesus.

Dani I just wanted to let you know your message really hit me hard. I had been tring to find a way to bless me neighbors this year and with finaces really short anyway I did not know how I could do this then me and my husband got to talking and we decided to get them some fire wood since they burn wood and have partitcly ran out that is their sole heating source and they have five kids we thought that would be the best blessing and best gift for them.

What ever you do don’t get into debt over the Christmas period. Who wants to start the year with a debt around the neck.
instead give presents that mean something, rather than costs a lot. i have cut my Xmas shopping bill by two quarters and i think the present are more appreciated than ever.
