Does Disappointment Justify Degradation?

Let’s take a closer look at a popular phrase most children may have been told to use as a response to taunting from a playmate or at school: “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never harm me.” Sure, on the surface it sounds good and, no doubt, has either run through your mind or been uttered from your lips. But, is it really true? Don’t get me wrong…broken bones and bruises HURT! However, with the proper medical treatment and care, your life goes on pretty well unaffected unless you’re a pro athlete or Olympic competitor. Now, consider some of the things that have been said to you throughout your lifetime.

It could have been a teacher calling you stupid, a parent calling you ugly, a friend calling you selfish, a boss calling you incompetent, a spouse calling you a liar…hmmmm, did ANY of these hit a little too close to home? The words spoken in anger and disappointment can leave invisible, yet very real scars that can haunt you for a lifetime!

Tune in to The Dani Johnson Show as Dani explores the permanent damage degrading words can have on a child or anybody else and creating strategies to deal with relationship issues!
